Butte Local Development Corporation (BLDC) is a proud member of the Headwaters Tech Hub Consortium.

​

The Montana Headwaters Tech Hub Consortium received a formal designation as a Regional Technology & Innovation Hub from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration in 2024.

 

The Montana Headwaters Tech Hub will develop smart photonic sensing systems that can be deployed in autonomous systems and applied to critical defense, resource management, and disaster prevention applications.

BLDC is committed to building an ecosystem for photonics and quantum industry businesses to thrive in Butte. Butte's cost of living is has remained affordable and we have a rich history in skilled manufacturing, engineering, and processing, as well as a logistical advantage for product distribution. The potential exists for manufacturing operations in the photonics and quantum industries to put down roots in Butte.

Montana Tech Photonics Testbed Facility

Montana Technological University is currently developing a rugged terrain test bed facility for unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles, other types of robotics that utilize photonic sensor systems at its 150-acre Energy, Environment, & Innovation Field Campus, which is adjacent to the west side of campus. The project is funded through $41 million awarded Tuesday to Headwaters Hub from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
